I. Information about Yunnan Normal University

Yunnan Normal University (henceforth YNNU), the former Teachers’ College of the National Southwest Associated University which was the merger of Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University after the Anti-Japanese War breakout in 1938, is a key university co-constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Yunnan Provincial Government. As a single key normal university of Yunnan Province, YNNU is also one of the one hundred universities funded by the National Key Project for the Quality Enhancement of the Higher Institutions in Central and West China. With a long history and a great tradition, it is rated as “Excellence” in the teaching-quality and employment by the Ministry of Education of China.

YNNU, covering a total area of three thousand mu (about five hundred acres), has 25 schools, 2 independent colleges, and more than 40 research centers and institutes, such as the National Solar-heater Quality Testing Center, the Sino-British Solar-energy Research and Development Center, the Sino-Laos Joint Lab for Recyclable Energy Resources, the Ministry of Education’s Key Lab, the Ministry of Education’s Engineering Research Center, the Ministry of Education’s Innovative Team, Technological Application and Innovation, Research Center for the Opening of Southwest China and Frontier Security, Research Institute of Sino-Tibetan Languages, Institute of Studies of Yunnan, Yunnan College of Chinese Language and Culture, Kunming Strategy Research Institute for Pan-Asian Talent Training and Development. With the rapid enhancement of scientific research, YNNU’s research funds are over 100 million yuan (RMB) annually.

YNNU has two post-doctoral research stations in the first-level discipline, one doctoral programme in the first-level discipline, seven doctoral programmes in the second-level discipline, twenty-six master’s programmes in the first-level discipline, one hundred and thirty master’s programmes in the second-level discipline, and thirteen professional master’s programmes such as MBA, MPA and MEd. It is one of the first twenty-four universities in China that offer the Master’s Program for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.

II. Qualifications

i. Identification

a. Applicants from Hong Kong and Macao should hold a valid Hong Kong or Macao Permanent Resident Identity Card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents

b. Applicants from Taiwan should hold Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents.

ii. Applicants for Master’s degree programmes should acquire Bachelor’s degree (including the same level of Bachelor’s degree in Mainland). Applicants for Doctoral degree programmes should acquire Master’s degree (including the same level of Master’s degree in Mainland).

iii. Applicants need to have a sound physical and mental health.

iv. Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors in the relevant research field are required.

iii. Documents for application

Following documents should be provided for application:

a. Photocopy of ID card. (Hong Kong or Macao Permanent Resident Identity Card, Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, and Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents).

b. Application Form for applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

c. Two passport photos (in size of 2.5 cm×3.5 cm).

d. Copies of a relevant bachelor’s degree or master’s degree certificate with first or second class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.

e. The transcript during the period of bachelor’s degree or master’s degree programme study.

f. Recommendations from two professors or associate professors.

g. Health report.

h. For the application fee, please contact each organization listed above.

i. Each applicant can only apply for one major or one research programme.

VI. Preliminary Examination

i. Time: April 11th – 12th, 2015, from 9:00-12:00 and 14:30-17:30 (Beijing Time)

ii. Location: Depends on the place where the application is submitted.

iii. Examination subjects:

a. For the Master’s degree Programme, applicants need to take a foreign language test (total score: 100 points) and two subject tests (total score: 150 for each subject), and for the Doctoral degree Programme, applicants take a foreign language test (total score: 100 points) and two subject tests (total score: 100 points for each subject).

b. Applicants of Master of Public Administration, Business Administration, Professional Accounting, Tourism Management need to take a foreign language test (total score: 100 points) and a comprehensive administrative capacity test (total score: 200 points).

VII. Reexamination and physical examination

i. For the applicants having succeeded in the preliminary examination, they need to take the reexamination early in May, and the reexamined location is YNNU; for more details, please visit the website of Enrollment Department of Yunnan Normal University.

ii. Like the applicants from Mainland China, the applicants are required to take a physical examination.

VIII. Enrollment

i. The acceptance is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the documents provided by applicants, the results of preliminary examination and reexamination, superviors’ acknowledgements and physical examination.

ii. The acceptance notification will be received in June.

iii. Applicants on being informed of acceptance must register in person with the Enrollment Department early in September (for the prescribed time, see Admission Notice). Upon registration, students are required to take a physical reexamination, and those who fail in the physical reexamination in accordance with the national relevant healthy criteria will be cancelled their admission qualifications.

iv. Students who cannot resigister within the prescribed period must ask for leave. Those who fail to do so will also be cancelled their admission qualifications.

IX. Tuition

Tuition fees for students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan will be charged from ¥7000 to ¥12000 (RMB) on the national relevant regulations issued by the Ministry of Education. The charge is the same as that of students from Mainland China.

X. Scholarships

Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan can apply for scholarships and stipends in accordance with the national relevant regulations. Besides that, students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are entitled to Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Students Scholarship granted by the Ministry of Education and Yunnan Normal University respectively. The award of the latter type of scholarship is from¥800 to ¥5000 (RMB).

XI. Duration

i. Master’s degree programme: 3 years (5 years at most)

ii. Doctoral degree programme: 4 years (6 years at most)

iii. Graduation: Obtain all the credits, finish the Master’s or Doctoral degree thesis and pass the thesis oral defense.

XIII. Living on Campus

i. Accommodation

a. The rental charge for common dormitory on Yi’er-yi Campus is ¥400 (RMB) per year.

b. The rental charge for six-people dormitory on Chenggong Campus is ¥800 (RMB) per year.

c. The rental charge for four-people dormitory on Chenggong Campus and Yi’er-yi Campus is ¥1200 (RMB) per year.

ii. Catering

a. Mode of settlement: All the payment in cafeterias and snack bars on campus can be settled by student card.

b. Monthly cost of living:

Male students: 560-600 yuan

Female student: 470-500 yuan

Basic cost of living: 400 yuan

c. Food Variety

The unique natural environment of Yunnan Province provides all kinds of green food which are served for every meal in every cafeterias and snack bars with a reasonable prize. Besides that, different styles of Chinese food and drink are served, such as Yunnan local styles of food like rice noodle, bean pudding, rice dumpling, soybean milk, fast food, local barbeque and local snacks, etc., and Northern Chinese styles of food like Baozi (steamed pie), Mantou (steamed bun), Huajuan (steamed twisted roll), wonton, Jiaozi (dumpling), noodles and some other stewed tonic and nourishing food, etc.
