Open-Admission Guide for Hong Kong High School Graduates,2013, YNNU

Yunnan Normal University (henceforth YNNU) traces its founding back to the former Teachers College of the National Southwest Associated University which was established in 1938. It covers a total area of 3,330 mu (about 543 acres). It consists of 23 schools, 2 independent schools, and more than 40 research institutes. YNNU has 10 disciplines—literature, history, philosophy, law, education, management, science, technology, economics and arts, 70 undergraduate majors, 1 mobile post-doctoral station, 1 PhD program in first–class disciplines, 4 PhD programs in second–class disciplines, 26 MA programs in first-class disciplines, 127 MA programs in second-class disciplines, ten of which are professional master’s programs like Education and MBA. It is one of the first 24 leading universities in China that offer the Master’s Program for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. YNNU is a provincial key university in Yunnan Province with teacher education as its characteristic. It also features a balance between the Humanities and the Sciences, a solid foundation and coordinated development of disciplines.

3. Programs: The University is authorized to offer different levels of education, from undergraduate to PhD.

4. Type of Institution: Public higher institution, a key university under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province.

5. Program Duration:A bachelor’s degree requires 4-year full-time study on campus.

6. Graduation Requirements: Students who have finished and passed all the courses required by the curriculum or have earned the required number of credits will be granted a graduation diploma of Yunnan Normal University and a bachelor’ degree in accordance with the Regulations on Academic Degrees of the People’s Republic of China.

7. Overseas Chinese students and students from Hong Kong, Macau SARs and Taiwan may apply for exemption from the courses of military training and political theories, and their studies will be managed by Regulations on Administration of Students in Regular Higher Education Institutions and other relevant regulations issued by the Ministry of Education. They should return to where they come from after graduation.

C. Application

1. Application Requirements

Applicants need to hold a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card or a Non-Permanent Resident Identity Card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents, and meet either of the following requirements:

1) students who take part in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination 2013

2) students who take part in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination 2013

2. How to apply

Applicants need to log onto the open admission website for Hong Kong high school graduates---http://www.ecogd.edu.cn/lzbm/ks/index.jsp to pre-register from 6th May, 2013 to 6th June, 2013. Then you should go to China Education Exchange (HK) Centre in person to confirm your registration. The submission of application documents should include the following:

1) Printed application form

2) E-passport photo (JPG & 168×240 pixel & within 10 k)

3) Related ID and study document (certificates of prizes and awards, Recommendation fron the Principal, Principal’s Nominations Scheme Individual Application Form, etc.)

4) Application fee

If you can not go to China Education Exchange (HK) Centre in person for special reasons, you can entrust other people to submit your application documents and confirm your information with Your ID card, the entrustee’s ID card and a letter of proxy with your signature.

3. Interview

D. Admissions Principles

Apart from conduction of the basic admission principles “under leadership of the university and supervision of the Admissions Office”, such principles as — serious implementation of national admissions policies, comprehensive assessment of moral, intellectual and physical education, “fair competition and talent scouting” and “merit-based enrollment” — have been fully carried out in practice. The specific admission rules can be listed as follows:

1. Applicants for any programs of our university should make online application: online application is compulsory for successful application. The Admissions Office will not deal with the application materials until the applicant completes the online application.

2. Competitive selection of applicants will be made on the basis of the following compulsory requirements for four core subjects, coupled with “Student Learning Profile (SLP)” submitted by each applicant and approved by Hong Kong Education Bureau (HK EDB) and his/her graduating school.

“3, 3, 2, 2” is the admission requirement for applicants participating in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination, specifically, Level 3 in English Language and Chinese Language, plus Level 2 in Mathematics and Liberal Studies. But the requirement for those who apply for Art and Physical Education is “2, 2, 1,1”.

On the other hand, the admission requirement for applicants participating in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE, or more commonly known as the A-level) is “Grade E” in Chinese Language and Culture and Use of English plus “Grade E” in two other subjects; “Grade E” in Chinese Language and Culture and Use of English plus one subject with “Grade E” in the A-level and two other subjects with “Grade E” in the Hong Kong Advanced Supplementary Level Examination (HKASLE).

3. All admitted students are privileged to choose their favorite majors and their personal preferences will be given full consideration.

4. The applicants for Art and Physical Education should take their personal expertise into discreet considerations.

5. There is no specified requirement for foreign language background of the applicants, but English is supposed to be the medium of instruction upon admission.

6. There is no specified ratio of male to female students in all the majors.

E. Registration & Physical Examination

The admitted overseas Chinese students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are required to come to Yunnan Normal University for registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice of Yunnan Normal University.

The admitted students are required to take a physical examination within three months after registration. Those who fail to meet the health criteria for the programs they have chosen can confer with the university on the possibility of transfer to other undergraduate programs; for those who are confirmed upon examination to be ineligible for studying in the university due to health reasons, the university will treat the case according to relevant articles as specified in Regulations of Yunnan Normal University on the Records Management of Full-time Undergraduate Students.
